France 1 Peru 0: Mbappe books last-16 spot with record goal

Kylian Mbappe made history as France booked their place in the World Cup s knockout rounds with an unconvincing 1-0 Group C defeat of Peru.

France were fortunate in their 2-1 opening win over Australia and they had slices of luck again at the Ekaterinburg Arena on Thursday.

Mbappe s goal, which came from close-range after Olivier Giroud s shot took a wicked deflection to beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, saw the 19-year-old become the youngest player to score for France at a major international tournament.

As they did in losing narrowly to Denmark, Peru had plenty of chances, returning captain Paolo Guerrero firing at Hugo Lloris and Pedro Aquino clipping the post with a super strike from range.

However, Peru were unable to find a way through and Ricardo Ga…

Sacchi backs Juve for Champions League glory

Former Italy and AC Milan head coach Arrigo Sacchi is certain Juventus have what it takes to win the Champions League this season.

Juventus have dominated Italian football, winning five successive Serie A crowns and they are on track for another Scudetto, but the Turin giants have set their sights on European glory.

Runners-up in 2014-15, Massimiliano Allegri s Juve will face Portuguese club Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.

And iconic boss Sacchi who guided Milan to back-to-back European Cup titles in 1989 and 1990 believes it is Juve s time to shine in their quest for a third Champions League trophy and first since 1996.

I am certain this can be the right year for Juventus in Europe, Sacchi said in an interview with La Stampa.

The Premier League returns once again this weekend for the final set of fixtures prior to the last international break of 2021. Every club from top to bottom will have different motives this week, whether it be wanting to carry momentum into the break or simply wanting to survive before regrouping and analysing how the season is going. On Friday, two clubs who have been less than stellar thus far will collide as Southampton play host to Aston Villa.

Southampton

Southampton s squad isn t quite where it once was but in the last few games, Ralph Hasenhuttl has them showing signs of life in the battle against the drop. They ve always been viewed as something of a feeder club with people not really appreciating wha…

Di Santo sorry for swift Werder departure

Schalke striker Franco Di Santo apologised for the nature of his departure from Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen, with fans unhappy with the Argentine s exit.

Di Santo made his debut in a Schalke shirt in a 0-0 draw with Porto in their penultimate pre-season friendly before their Bundesliga campaign begins on August 14 at Werder.

The 26-year-old tried to smooth the waters with Werder who made €6million on the player after he came to Germany as a free agent after three seasons at Wigan after the hit-out at the Heidewaldstadion.

Bremen director Thomas Eichin was quoted as saying he was anything but impressed by the swiftness of Di Santo s departure, which will make for an interesting reception if Di Santo runs out at the Weserstadion in little over two weeks time.…

LeBron James Devoured The Noisy Wizards

The context for LeBron’s 57-point masterpiece last night is something I, a devoted Wizards fan, would prefer to ignore—the Wizards spent portions of the spring and an interview with ESPN’s The Jump chirping that the Cavs ducked them in last season’s playoffs, and went so far as to say that they, the Wizards, who’ve neither advanced past the second round of the playoffs nor won more than 49 games during my lifetime, were the class of the Eastern Conference. Yeesh. What I would really like to do is puff up inside my basketblogger togs and scold you for needing that narrative silliness to appreciate LeBron’s sweet basketball moves, a position that not coincidentally ushers your attention away from the many crimes of self-ownage the Wizards have already committed this season. Q…
