Portugal lacked ´a little bit of magic´ in Scotland stalemate, says Martinez

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez was in a defensive mood following his team s goalless draw away to Scotland in the Nations League on Tuesday night.

After scoring in each of the Spaniard s first 12 competitive matches in charge of Portugal, the Selecao have since drawn a blank in four of their last seven matches.

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota among other big hitters starting, they were unable to find a way past 41-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who made some impressive saves when they did get in on goal.

Portugal registered 14 shots during the encounter, though only three were on target, ending the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.52.

When asked what was missing from the performance, Martinez alluded to a la…

Sin bins can tackle dissent among players, referees’ welfare charity boss claims

Sin bins are the answer to tackling dissent among players, the boss of a referees’ welfare charity has said.

Sin bins have been deemed a success in the grassroots game and details of a trial to test them at higher levels of football for dissent as well as tactical fouls were set to be published by the International Football Association Board, which sets football’s laws, last Friday.

Publication was indefinitely delayed at the last minute however, with sources citing the need for further discussion to take place at next month’s IFAB annual general meeting. The delay followed reports last Thursday evening which highlighted that blue cards would be used to send players to the sin bin.

The idea of trialling sin bins was heavily criticised by Tottenham and Liver…

Market: France to win against Romania
Odds:

France welcome Romania to the Stade de France tonight for their opening Euro 2016 clash, and are big favourites to pick up all three points to boost their hopes of progressing from Group A.

Les Blues come into this summer’s tournament off the back of four consecutive wins, having beaten the Netherlands, Russia, Cameroon and Scotland. Didier Deschamps’ side are in fantastic shape to get off the mark with aplomb, and will further fancy their chances of victory with how inconsistent Romania have been.

The visitors have failed to win four of their last six games, most notably being held by DR Congo and suffering a defeat to the Ukraine. They have picked up just one win from four ahead of their clash with France, and migh…

With the vast majority of English Premier League clubs having played 33 or 34 league games thus far, the 2011-12 Premier League campaign is slowly but surely coming to a close.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are level on points with Spurs, but are fifth in the table because there goal difference, +8, is inferior to Spurs +19 goal difference.

Roberto Di Matteo s Chelsea are currently in sixth place, two points behind Tottenham Hot…
